Design
Truly a race car for the street, this Ferrari F50 is number 34 of only 349 built for the entire world. The carbon fiber, Kevlar and Nomex honeycomb body panels are loaded onto a carbon fiber chassis. The incredible V12 engine is bolted directly to the chassis and acts as a structural member of the car. It redlines at over 10,000 rpm. One thing that was missing is a radio. No F50’s had one. Since this car is owned by a music lover as well as a driver, it had to be added. Al & Ed’s in West Hollywood designed a lightweight system in keeping with the design of the car. An iPod is the only source for music, and the entire system weighs in at less than 22lbs, less than 1% of the vehicle’s total weight.
Installation
The most difficult part of the design was to mount components where they would sound good while maintaining the design and flow of the vehicle. The A-pillars of the vehicle were hand-built from fiberglass and house the MB Quart 4in. component set. Pioneer’s super-shallow 10″ subwoofer resides in a hand-built, fiberglass enclosure between the driver and passenger seats. The amp is tucked away, out of sight. The iPod plugs in at the center console and plays directly into the Alpine amplifier. The system sounds great, although maybe not as nice as the sound of that 4.7 liter V12 as it winds up to redline. This is the only F50 in the world with a sound system!
