Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood, CA is the first to totally customize a Ferrari 458

I am proud to announce that immediately after the 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia’s starting getting delivered to VIP customer we were the first to completely customize one. The car arrived in early October with less than two weeks till the SEMA Show in Las Vegas where the car would make it debut. Here is what Al & Eds Autosound did to make this already beautiful car an the first AE Edition Ferrari 458 Italia.

As always were get out inspiration from the car itself and this beauty was no exception. Starting with a black and yellow theme it was clear to us for the first moment that we need to stick with that color palate and use as much yellow carbon fiber as possible.

Exterior Upgrades:

Starting with the exterior we installed matte black with a yellow outline Scuderia style stripes. The front, side, and rear reflectors  plus the tail lights received a black out smoke treatment. The front wing inserts in the bumper and rear diffuser were wrapped in 3M gloss carbon fiber material giving  it an authentic carbon fiber look while protecting those areas from getting rock chips. Since the owner of this car likes to drive it as much as possible we wanted to protect the car from getting road rash from rocks chips. We installed clear bra protective film on the front bumper, full hood, fenders, rockers and wheel arches.  The exhaust tip was painted matte black using special high temperature paint giving a more aggressive appearance instead of the factory chrome look. Even though the car has a front lifting system sometimes you forget to use it. We installed front skid plates under the bumper that protect it from scrapping or cracking when entering low slopping driveways.

Wheel & Tires:

While the factory uses a 20″ front and rear tire/wheel set up thanks to our friends at Giovanna Wheels we put 21″ front and 22″ rear GFG 3-piece Italia wheels. These wheels were designed and inspired from the factory upgraded 20″ wheel. There is no doubt that these new wheels finished with a matte black center, yellow inner flange, black bolts and a gloss black outer lip make this car look amazing.  Pirelli P-Zero Nero 255/30/21 front and 315/25/22 rear size tires were used. This 21″ x 9.5″ front and 22″ x 11.5″ rear set up works perfectly with the cars factory diameter specs. The customer and I both felt that the car sits too high off the ground so we lowered it by .5″ to really set it all off.

Audio Upgrades:

This is the first Ferrari to have a radio that is controlled unlike any stereo that you have seen. This is no actual stereo like in most cars, only controls on the dash that correspond with the multi function display in the drivers zone. We interfaced a Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.2EQ Processor to the factory radio. This not only gave us a flat EQ response to start with but also the ability to add amplifiers. We then have the ability to tune and time align each speaker separately from our lap top computer that connects and makes tuning changes in real time via Bluetooth. Sparing no expense we installed Focal Utopia Kit No. 7 three-way component speakers. These are the most expensive and best sounding speakers in car audio! The 6.5″ woofer and 3″ mid range installed perfectly into the door. The tweeter was installed on top of the door panel in a custom made yellow carbon fiber pod. Molded and fabricated from scratch this tweeter pod looks great inside the car. Continuing with the yellow, black and carbon fiber theme we fabricated and subwoofer enclosure behind the seats for two Kenwood eXcelon 12″ shallow carbon fiber woofers. This enclosure was wrapped in Ferrari black leather with yellow carbon fiber inserts and plexiglass. Inspired by the floating Cavallino in the front bumper we decided to add another prancing horse in the center of the enclosure. No leg room was compromised from this enclosure and therefore the seats still move all the way back for extended leg room.  Under the front bonnet we installed two Alpine PDX series amplifiers. A PDX-F6 totalling over 600 watts of power was used to power the front speakers while a PDX-M12 totalling over 1200 watts of power was used to power the subwoofers. The Focal cross block was also mounted up front. Yellow carbon fiber, plexiglass and black leather were used to make sure it matched the interior theme. So with over 1,800 watts of power, 153 bands of EQ and time alignment this car rocks!

Ticket Avoidance System:

We all know how fast this Ferrari is and before you know it you are driving way over the speed limit. In order to help the driver from getting speeding tickets we installed the Escort 9500 Ci ticket avoidance system. This system offer front and rear radar detection for X, K and KA frequencies while diffusing laser gun readings with 2 front and 1 rear hidden diffuser. In addition this system has built in GPS and knows where most speed traps and camera intersections are warning you in advance so you can slow down.

Exterior Paint & Interior Protection:

With the constant concern of bird droppings, water spots, swirls and spilling something in your interior keeping any car especially a black Ferrari is not easy. Al & Eds Autosound now proudly offers Cilajet interior and exterior sealant protection. Once you have your exterior and interior treated with Cilajet  soap and water is all you will need to keep your car clean. Interior spills just wipe off and this product is backed by a 10 year warranty.

The Ferrari 599 is one of the finest Ferrari’s ever made. Unfortunately for most owners the Bose audio system just doesn’t meet the audio standards that an owner would expect. Fortunately for all those unsatisfied Ferrari 599 owners Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood CA. knows how to make the audio system sound as great as the car performs and looks.

Audio Upgrades:

The owner of this particular car not only wanted sound improvement but also wanted to replace the factory stereo with an iPhone. Here is what we did to make it an AE Edition.

The factory stereo was removed and replaced with a docking station for an iPhone. The docking station is motorized by a switch so that you can slide in the iPhone and then motorize it back into the dash. The frame was created using carbon fiber and black Alcantara suede. Once the iPhone is docked it not only charges but also makes a connection to the Kenwood Car Portal system.

On top of the dash we installed a Kenwood 4.3″ touch screen monitor to control the Car Portal system. This system offers the owner AM/FM/iPod audio/iPod Video/Bluetooth and Navigation all touch screen. The screen was installed in a custom fabricated housing using carbon fiber.

The Ferrari 599 comes with three dash installed 3.5″ speakers. No door speakers! We decided not to use the center speaker and replaced the dash speakers with Focal Power series 3.5″ which are part of the 165KRX3 kit that we used. The tweeters we molded into the door pillars and the 6.5″ mid bass drivers were custom installed in the doors. In order to achieve installation of the door speakers we first needed to separate the door panel insert from the outer door panel. Then we needed to create an enclosure within the panel/door for the speakers. Once we accomplished that the 6.5″ mid bass driver was fitted flush with the door panel and the insert was reupholstered in black Alcantara suede. We created custom speaker grilles using plexiglass and carbon fiber.

In the rear factory location of the car we installed Focal 130KRC component speakers for rear fill. For bass we used a JL Audio 12W6V2D4 series subwoofer and installed it in the trunk of the car in a fiberglass and carbon fiber enclosure. We removed the factory rear deck mounted 8″ shallow woofer so that the sound of the JL W6 could play into the interior of the car.

To power the system we used two Alpine PDX series amplifiers totalling over 1600 watts of power. We also installed the Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.2 EQ processor so that we could properly tune, time align and control the sound in the car. All this tuning is done via bluetooth while connected to a laptop.

Exterior Upgrades:

The Ferrari 599 has beautiful lines to its sculpted body. We decided to accentuate some of those lines by installing matte black wrap material in the center of the hood, complete roof and trunk deck lid. On top of that we installed 3M carbon fiber material that unless you look real closely it is hard to tell that it is not real dry carbon fiber. We used the same carbon fiber material on the front bumper lower lip, side skirts,  rear skirts, door handles and gas door. Overall it gives an appearance of a carbon fiber body kit.

We used black film to smoke the side markers and rear tail light fascia.

After we completed Mommy’s Ferrari, Daddy aka Diko from Giovanna Wheels contacted me again and was jealous to say the least! His wife’s audio system sounded better than the one in his Ferrari. We had to do something about that!  

Normally that really would not be a challenge for us. We have worked on over two dozen F430’s over the past few years but this car is not your standard F430. It is a light weight race car that has no interior sound deadening, no carpet and the exhaust on this Scuderia is unlike anything that you have ever heard!

While most enthusiasts would say that the engine sound is an orchestra of beautiful tones and that you do not need to even need to turn on the radio this owner likes to enjoy his iPod and wanted a sound system that would compliment the car without ruining it.  Here comes one of our toughest challenges of my career. How do you install a great car audio system  in a Ferrari that came with two lousy 3″ speakers mounted under the dash and the since the rest of the car is all carbon fiber no one in their right mind would cut into for speakers?

Here is what Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood CA. did to create this custom AE Edition Ferrari Scuderia.

The factory radio was replaced with a Kenwood eXcelon KVT-614 motorized 6.95″ flip out touch screen radio with the KNA-G510 Garmin based navigation unit. The Kenwood KCAIP-301V  allows you to control all your iPod audio and video content from the touch screen.

The factory leather kick panels were removed and new ones were custom created and molded using red carbon fiber. We wrapped the outer portion in Ferrari black leather and stitched it in red to match the interior of the car. No legroom was lost and the factory kick panels can go back into the car to factory spec since no cutting was done. Kenwood eXcelon slim XR-S17P component 6.5″ speakers were used.

Behind the seats we custom created a subwoofer enclosure for two 12″ shallow Kenwood eXcelon KFC-XW1200F woofers made with carbon fiber. The enclosure rests on the factory rear ledge and the seats still move all the way back with no loss of space. The enclosure was wrapped in Ferrari black leather, matching red stitching with red and black carbon fiber. Plexiglass was used to create an additional visual layer and to highlight the carbon fiber.

Under the front bonnet we were inspired by the shape of the front of the car and especially the famous Scuderia stripes. If you look closely you will notice that we shaped the frames of the Kenwood eXcelon amplifiers XR-1S and XR-4S to look like the front of the car and used red carbon fiber to replicate the hood stripes. The amplifiers total over 1600 watts of power and really give the speakers the clean power that they need to properly perform.

For show purposes the car has been outfitted with two different styles of 20″ 3-piece GFG forged wheels by Giovanna. One the drivers side are Scudetria finished in matte black a gun metal grey for sporty aggressive look. On the passenger side are Messina with a classic gloss black center and chrome outer lip. Pirelli P-Zero Nero 235/30/20 front and 325/45/20 rear.

A brand new 2010 Ferrari California customized for Mommy?

Mommy’s Ferrari California

To be one of the first to work on a brand new Ferrari is an opportunity that most shops only dream of. To have the freedom given to you by the customer to custom create whatever you want on a 2010 Ferrari California is an opportunity of a lifetime!

When Diko the owner of Giovanna wheels contacted me to work on his wife’s new Ferrari California my first remark was “really”? You bought a new Ferrari CA. for your wife and only after you made sure that you son Koko can ride in back seats you completed the purchase? The answer was “yes”. So here is what Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood,CA did to “Mommy’s Ferrari California”.

Our approach to this car was totally different from every other car we have ever worked on. First off, we needed to make sure that the stroller would fit into the trunk of the car. If that was not enough to worry about we needed to make sure that grocery bags would also fit.  We quickly realized that our audiophile system had to be created around a car seat, stroller and grocery bags.

Exterior Upgrades:

GFG Forged California 3-piece wheels. The front wheels are 21″ with tire sizes of 255/30/21 and 22″ rear wheels with tire sizes of 315/25/22 Pirelli P-Zero Nero. Two different finishes of the same wheel are on the car. They are just painted in different ways.

Ticket Avoidance System:

We installed the Escort “Ticket Avoidance System” The controller is installed in the center console and the front laser defusers are custom molded into the front grilles. The rear laser defuser installs in the same holes as the top license plate screws. This system will warn the driver of upcoming X,K & KA bands of police radar while “defusing” laser guns.  

Interior Upgrades:

As they say “your children come first” and in this case we made sure that Koko would enjoy riding in Mommy’s Ferrari. We took his car seat booster and reupholstered it using authentic Ferrari leather to match the front diamond quilted seats. We embroidered the Ferrari shield logo into the seat and replaced the SF (Scuderia Ferrari) lower logo with Koko’s name.

The front floor mats were replaced with hand carved GFG logo plush mats.

Audio Upgrades:

The factory Bose radio system was removed and an Alpine IXA-W407 am/fm/iPod/iPod video 7″ touch screen radio was molded into the factory opening.

For navigation we interfaced the Alpine NVE-M300 module and the HCE-C107D for back up camera. When the car is engaged into reverse a color reverse image appears on the front screen.

The front speakers were replaced using Alpine SPX-17PRO 6.5″ components and the rear speakers were replaced with SPX-13PRO 5.25″ components. These speakers are powered by an Alpine PDX4.150 amplifier totaling over 600 watts of power. For bass we used an Alpine SWR-1042D 10″ dual voice coil subwoofer. The subwoofer system is powered by an Alpine PDX1.1000 amplifier totaling over 1,000 watts of power. We recreated the rear wall to match the diamond quilted look of the front seats and so that the bass can play through and into the car. The amplifiers are installed in the trunk of the car using Ferrari leather and color matching materials.

For rear seat entertainment we installed an Alpine DHA-S690 DVD changer and a 7″ wide screen monitor. We were inspired by the factory center console and continued that theme with the fixture that houses the Alpine rear monitor.

iPod audio and video are enjoyed throughout this car with an especially engraved “Mommy’s Ferrari California” Red iPod. 

When you think of a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti customized usually doesn’t come across you mind. NOT THIS ONE THOUGH!

Usually Ferrari owners don’t want to customize their Ferrari 612 but not this owner. The owner of this car wanted to take his Ferrari to a whole new level. Here is what Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood, CA did to make this one A-E style.

22″ custom made Giovanna GFG Forged 3-piece Monterey wheels with a chrome outer lip, black & machined centers and a yellow highlights truly set the tone of this Ferrari.

After the wheels were installed it was obvious that the car needed to have the suspension lowered 3/4″

To enhance the aggressive look matte black material was installed on the roof of the car.

The rear tail lights were smoked out black and a custom exhaust was installed to add performance and sound.

Next is what Al & Eds Autosound does best. Car Audio. The factory radio was removed and a Kenwood DNX series multi media system was custom molded into the dash of the car to make it look like factory installed.

Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.2 processor with 153 bands of equalization, time alignment and an independent subwoofer control knob. After we install this device and hook it up to our laptop via bluetooth we can control and tune each speaker in the car independently.

Focal 165KRX2 component speakers were installed in the doors and of the car.

Pioneer 10″ shallow subwoofer was custom installed in a fiberglass enclosure in the passenger foot well area. No legroom was lost.

Two Kenwood digital amplifiers were installed in the trunk of the car to power the sound system that provide over 1,000 watts of power. We created a Ferrari “daytona” theme fascia for the amplifiers using authentic Ferrari leather with machined aluminum accents to match the interior of the car.

HRE custom made and painted 19″ wheels with Pirelli tires.

Brembo upgrade brakes front and rear.

The front and rear seats had the inserts reupholstered using Ferrari black leather to create a two tone affect.

K40 front and rear radar detector and laser defusers were installed to help prevent the owner from getting speeding tickets.

Audio:

Since there is no depth when you remove the Ferrari factory radio to fit an aftermarket radio we molded the Alpine touch screen monitor in the center console area. This monitor via touch screen allows you to control am/fm, XM satellite radio, iPod, navigation, DVD and Cd from the changer mounted in the trunk.

The front and rear speakers were replaced with Focal K2 Power series 3-way component speakers.

JL Audio 12W6 series subwoofer was custom mounted in an enclosure in the trunk. A port through was created as well so the bass can travel into the interior of the car.

Three Alpine PDX series amplifiers were used totalling over 1900 watts of power.

Did Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood,Ca inspire Ferrari to use an iPod as the radio in the new Scuderia 16M just like we did two years ago in the F50?

We will never know the answer to that but it seems possible. This weekend I was visiting a Ferrari dealership and noticed something that nobody knew anything about nor did we know was coming! If you choose an iPod interface as an option for your new Ferrari F430 Scuderia 16M there is no radio. Instead it comes with an iPod that has the “Prancing Horse” preloaded to your iPod Touch screen saver and additional Ferrari exhaust notes.

The iPod Touch clips into a specific holder exactly where the radio would go. Obviously there is no am/fm or satellite radio option but you do have a very cool iPod integration. The volume is controlled but a separately mounted + and – volume switch mounted in the center console.

I wonder where they got that idea from? Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood did this exact type of integration into a Ferrari F50 two years ago! Very cool Ferrari but why didn’t you make it work with an iPhone? The built in GPS of an iPhone would give Ferrari users so much more. The factory radio was removed and an Alpine motorized 7″ flip out screen was installed in the dash. This new radio controls am,fm,cd, XM satellite radio, DVD, iPod, iPod video,navigation all via touch screen.

A shallow 12′ subwoofer was installed in a custom enclosure behind the drivers seat. Ferrari leather and red stitching made it look like it was installed by the factory.

Two Alpine PDX series digital amplifiers were installed under the front bonnet totalling over 1600 watts of power. A custom frame using Ferrari leather and red plexi glass as an accsent finished it all off.

To protect the exterior of the car we also installed skid plates and clear bra film on the front bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors.
