Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood, CA creates a sinister blacked out X6

The BMW X6 twin turbo V8 is probably the best looking and performing mid size SUV on the market today. We decided to give it a more aggressive appearance. To start the transformation we painted all the exterior chrome trim including the exhaust tips matte black. All the side markers and tail lights received a painted smoke black appearance. The exterior excessive badging was removed leaving only the classic BMW front and rear logos and the windows were tinted. Giovanna 22″ GFG 3-piece forged Newport wheels were custom made with a matte black center and a gloss black outer lip. Custom daytime running 5 LED strips were installed in the factory bumper. Each LED is 8 watts making them super bright. 

The BMW Z8 is timeless but the factory sound system had to go.

We are very fortunate that at Al & Eds Autosound West Hollywood we get a fair share of celebrity clients. While most of them do not mind if we disclose their names when we promote their cars this particular client has requested that we do not. So out of respect this “friend” will remain anonymous.

Once we received the creative freedom to make this BMW Z8 sound as good as it looks we decided to spare no expense and use nothing but the best components and create a one of a kind audiophile BMW Z8.

The factory radio was replaced with a Kenwood eXcelon KVT-696 motorized 7″ wide screen am/fm/xm/iPod/iPod video/cd/dvd & navigation (KNA-G610) touch screen unit. This radio is very easy to use and when you engage the car into reverse the back up camera that we installed displays on the screen with a rear view image.

The factory front speakers were a 6.5″ and tweeter component set. We replaced those and were able to fit in the factory locations the Focal Utopia Kit NO.7 These 3-way components are the finest in the world. While they are also the most expensive speakers available in car audio they are definitely worth every penny. The crossblock network that comes with these speakers was prominently displayed in the trunk.

Even though the BMW Z8 comes with rear speakers we felt that it was not necessary to have them replaced so we disconnected them. Every great audio system needs bass and we chose to custom fabricate two enclosures behind the seats for two Alpine SWR-T10 shallow subwoofers. As always it is our goal to match all our fabrications with the cars existing colors and scheme and the subwoofer enclosures truly do compliment the interior design.

To make sure we have complete control and tuning ability of the sound system we installed the Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.2 EQ processor. With 153 bands of equalization and time alignment this processor allows us to connect to it via bluetooth technology to our laptop and tune the audio system.

The complete system is powered by 2 Alpine PDX series amplifiers. These are the new 2010/2011 models. The front speakers are powered by the PDX-F6 totalling over 600 watts of power and the subwoofers are powered by the PDX-M12 totalling over 1,200 watts of power. These amplifiers were prominently displayed in the trunk of the car.

Audio Upgrades:

On screen interface for Alpine vehicle hub displays back up camera, iPod, iPod video and DVD all controlled by a wireless remote control.

Focal 3-way K2 Power series component speakers installed in the doors and in custom fabricated kick panels.Focal speakers were also installed in the rear doors.

A custom subwoofer enclosure was built for teo JL Audio 12W6 subwoofers. The sound is ported through the factory rear armrest.

Three Alpine PDX Series amplifiers were used to power the sound system totalling over 2,200 watts of power.

After we install this device and hook it up to our laptop via bluetooth we can control and tune each speaker in the car independently. The bass knob was installed inside the center console area.

K40 radar detector with front & rear laser defusers was also installed.

When the BMW M6 first came out everyone thought that is was perfect. But not Al & Eds Autosound in West Hollywood,Ca.

When we were approached with the opportunity to transform an already amazing car we knew that it would not be an easy task. Here is a detailed list of everything that was done to this car.

EVERYTHING AC SCHNITZER (ACS)! I mean everything! We could not wait till the parts started to come into the U.S. First came the light weight 20″ wheels. Then we installed lowering springs and a strut suspension brace. Then came the exterior body kit. The front bumper fascia was replaced with the chrome grille inserts and carbon fiber front defusers. The rear lower bumper section received a carbon fiber defuser and exhaust.The trunk received a deck lid spoiler and ACS badging. We then installed a Vorsteiner carbon fiber hood. It was a tough decision to make but we decided to paint the hood BMW jet black and only leave the carbon fiber vents exposed. Although we lover carbon fiber it never our intention to make this car look like every other Japanese car with a CF hood. To finish off the exterior we installed CF kidney grilles and smoked the front headlight eyebrow sections black as well as the rear tail light white section.

Now on to the interior. ACS foot pedals, e-brake handle, iDrive cover and floor mats were a must. To enhance the driving experience we installed a sport inspired thicker steering wheel with CF by Hartge.

Since this car was meant to go fast and the owner did not want to get speeding tickets we installed the Escort SRX radar detector with front and rear laser defusers. The controller is installed in the ashtray.

So now we saved the best for last. High end audio!

Focal Utopia Be Kit No.7 three way component speakers we installed in the doors

Focal K2 Power series speakers were installed in the rear seat factory locations.

Two JL Audio W6 series 10″ subwoofers we installed in a custom fabricated enclosure in the trunk. A special port was used to move the sound into the cabin through the rear seat armrest area.

Three Alpine PDX series amplifiers totaling over 2200 watts of power were installed in the trunk. Black leather and carbon fiber fabric  were used to finish off the display panel.
